What Exactly is a Roofer?
A roofer, either a roofing contractor roofing mechanic, or roofing specialist, is a professional who specializes in the building of roofs. Roofers repair, replace, and put on the roofs of residential buildings, with a range of different materials, including metal, shingle, asphalt, and fiber cement.
The main function of a roof is to protect the structure from the weather. When a home or building gets wet and is not properly insulated and/or waterproofed, it can begin to leak water into the structure. If the leak isn’t detected and dealt with quickly, then the water can damage internal parts of the home and also seep out onto the ground and may eventually cause damage to the house itself, as well as causing structural damage to the structure itself.
Roofers work to prevent this from happening, by making sure that the roof is completely waterproof, sealed, and protected. The roof is the only part of the home that will be directly exposed to the weather, so keeping it as clean as possible is extremely important. Roofers also clean out old shingles and make repairs, replacing any broken shingles. They also replace damaged pipes and ducts.
When a roofer comes to install a new roof, they are able to use many different types of materials for the roof, depending on what their client needs. Many roofers use plywood, but some will use aluminum, steel, or even cement if the client prefers. If they do use cement, they may use a blend of cement and asphalt, which is very strong but waterproof.
Roofing contractors will usually come into your home and install a new roof for you, whether you need them to or not. They will usually come into your home and assess the damage you have done to the roof by then telling you what materials you need for the new roof and how much they will charge for the installation. Once they have the roof installed, they will advise you of any further repairs you may need to do, if any, and may even call you for more advice. Once the roof is complete, they will usually give you a quote, which includes installation, roof cover, installation and repair materials, as well as roofing, if applicable.
There are some roofers who specialize in residential roofing and will only work on residential roofing jobs, while others will work on commercial and industrial roofs. This should be discussed when you first contact them. To get an estimate on the project, ask for a copy of the roofing contract, which details the job’s cost, how many days it will take to complete, any repairs or additions that may be needed, the time it will take to complete, as well as any additional fees that may be charged.
